Green Choice

Every home is different. However, construction in the US has followed several major trends in the last 40 years that resulted in industry wide changes and developments. Our Case Studies chronicle these developments by decade, illustrating the issues common to homes built in those years as well as our solutions for them.

Mission Statement

At GREENCHOICE, our core belief is that you do not have to accept subpar performance from your home.

More than anything else, your home is your place of refuge.  As such, your home should provide protection, safety and comfort.  Your home should be durable, provide good indoor environmental quality for your family’s health, and provide energy efficiency to minimize your operational costs.

Unfortunately, most homes today are costly to heat and cool, leaky and drafty, poorly ventilated and have questionable indoor environmental quality.  This results in homes that are often uncomfortable, have durability issues, and a negative impact on your family’s bottom line.

So where do our energy dollars go?

Inefficient air sealing not only causes leaks and drafts, but reduces the thermal performance of your home. This uncontrolled airflow accounts for between $13 and $15 billion dollars a year in energy losses from US homes.

Between 30% and 60% of the total energy used in American households is used to condition or maintain temperature within homes (this equates to about 25% of all energy used in the US).
Electricity costs more per unit of energy than fossil fuels – saving electricity means more money back in your pocket.
The average home has 300 – 400 cfm (cubic feet/minute) of air loss through HVAC ductwork. This increases energy costs by paying to continually recondition lost air.
The two biggest contributors to a home’s cooling load are:
  1. Return duct leaks in the attic (a leak in an attic return will suck hot air into the system that must be reconditioned), and
  2. The heat absorbed by windows.  Up to 45% of our designed cooling load is from the heat gain through windows.
Almost 10% of American household’s energy dollars are spent on phantom loads – devices and electronics that are run by remote control or hibernate while still consuming power.  Altogether, US households spend about $3 billion each year buying unnecessary electricity.
Water heating represents the biggest energy use in homes after space heating.  Water heaters can average anywhere from 20% - 30% of home energy usage.
50% of indoor environmental quality problems arise from inadequate ventilation.  The EPA has  now ranked indoor air quality as one of the top five risks to environmental and public health. The concentration of indoor air pollutants is 2 to 5 times higher, and sometimes greater, than concentrations of pollutants in outdoor air.
The average US household uses 350 gallons of water a day.  More than 25% of that is flushed down the toilet.
The average household spends as much as $500 per year on its water and sewer bill. By making  just a few simple changes to use water more efficiently, you could save about $170 per year.

MORE INCENTIVE TO ACT NOW TO IMPROVE THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND HEALTH OF YOUR HOME:

The Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 (H.R. 1424, Division B) applies tax credits to energy efficiency improvements in the building envelope of existing homes and for the purchase of high-efficiency heating, cooling and water-heating equipment.  Under the stimulus legislation signed by President Obama, the percentage of the cost and lifetime cap have been tripled, the list of eligible improvements have been expanded and the deadline for applying has been extended through the end of 2010.

The new tax credit also is in alignment with industry research showing that remodeling and retrofitting the nation’s existing homes will have a far more significant impact on reducing residential energy consumption than meeting even the most aggressive efficiency goals for new homes.
